3 things every expert should focus on

I am ALWAYS being asked “Stephanie, what are the things that are most important to focus on in order to build a successful business?”. My answer usually stops with “getting clients” but today I’d like to shed a bit more light onto this topic of focus.

As I've built my business from one that could have been considered a hobby to one that is seeing increased profit year after year, my focus has changed to these top 3 things that over the last 15 months have helped me see a drastic difference in company revenues and bottom line. By focusing on these 3 things FIRST, the other things seem to fall in line with ease. And, in the industry of "shiny object syndrome" and the "oh, that looks like its working, I will try that", lets face it, there NEEDS to be some limits on our focus so that we can actually accomplish what it is that we are trying to accomplish.

So, what are these 3 things that every expert business....scratch that EVERY business should focus on?

1. Marketing. Lets face it. Its an unsexy word, something many people, especially women hate doing but its a necessary evil. Marketing is the process of getting the word out about your business, letting prospective clients and customers know that you exist. And without an effective marketing strategy, this just will not happen, that is unless, Oprah calls you up! That said, your marketing plan doesn't have to be extremely complicated. As a matter of fact, it can be extremely simplistic and garner massive results. Sometimes its true that simplicity wins.

2. Lead generation. I don't hear this word much in the industry as a whole, but among the tops in the game, its all that we focus on. Its not enough for prospects to know you exist if their knowledge isn't generating leads. You know, those people that not only know you exist, but they are so excited about what you have to offer, they want to know more...they need to know more and NOW! As important as lead generation is, especially in this industry, the expert industry, which is the 2nd fastest growing industry in the world, I don't see lead generation done well at all. As an entrepreneur, someone who is SERIOUS about company profit and revenue, even when you aren't "launching", lead generation should be a top priority!!!!!!

3. Sales. Another one of those not so sexy words that are a must. You can have the best marketing and lead generation system ever created BUT if you can't close sales, you don't have a business. This is another area that I see many women skimp on because they hate selling. After all, most of us got in this industry because we love helping others. But lets be clear, helping alone is not building a business. You've got to make money and that means you need to know how to close the deal.

Each one of these topics are so important that I wouldn't suggest concentrating on one, but concentrating on them all. You can't have one without the other. Its utterly impossible. So, as much as you may hate marketing, are confused by lead generation and feel like a used car salesman at the thought of sales, I'm screaming "get over it" because if you plan to continue to build your business, drive more revenue than ever before and change lives, this is apart of the process...
