Marketing and Lead Gen Confusion

Having been in this industry for several years and having helped countless expert and service based business owners turn their businesses around I must say I have seen it all. Usually by the time I come into a business, the owners have tried everything that they know of to generate more revenue and profit within the company. The fact is though, usually they are focusing on the wrong thing or not enough of a thing. And because of that the company either isn’t making money or they are hemorrhaging money.

Let me explain.

Right now I am smack dab in the middle of chatting with my Elite 10 Entrepreneurs about the 5 things that every business must have dialed in perfectly if it plans to generate profit and quantum leap their revenue. Two of those things are marketing and lead gen (short for lead generation). In this industry I hear these terms used as if they are one but the fact is that they are not. They are completely separate.

Marketing is the process of getting potential clients and customers to know who you are. To get them familiar with your brand and your likeness, brand recognition. Example, you know me as the Quantum Leap Specialist. Entrepreneurs come to me when they are ready to Quantum Leap in their business. Basically, when you are ready to stop talking about making money and actually ready to take the action to generate the revenue I am your girl. I have put my brand and likeness of Stephanie Synclair in front of you enough for you to be familiar with me, my company and what we do. That is marketing. And I am ALWAYS marketing. I market via my social media pages on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. I have billboards across the US, radio commercials in a few markets and I market with ads on various networks including google and bing just to name a few. My goal is for millions of entrepreneurs to know who I am and what my company can do for them.

But this is the thing. You knowing who I am does not help us build a relationship. In order for us to really start building a relationship, me knowing what you like, what topics you like to read about, for me to invite you to my virtual and live events, etc, that takes lead gen. While marketing is the process of your potential customers and clients knowing who you are, lead gen is the process of you collecting data so that you can know who they are. This data comes through name, email, phone number, address, etc and without this you are missing out on an opportunity to build a wonderful relationship with potential clients and customers.

The fact is, most experts focus on one or the other. I know, I use to be one. All about marketing, getting your brand out in front of millions but the fact is, neither marketing nor lead gen can stand on its own. You need both. You need a system to get the world to know who you are and that you exist AND a system to take those that now are familiar with you and generate leads from them.

This is a huge part of why I am against bootstrapping. Bootstrapping is extremely popular in this industry. People come into this industry with pennies and attempt to start an expert business. Lets face it. This is one of the few industries you can come into with very little overhead. But this is the thing. When you come in bootstrapping, you stifle your brand. In order to keep your brand and likeness in front of potential clients and customers, it takes investment. And, in order to generate leads, thats another investment. I wish I was the “free angel” to fly down and tell you that you can bootstrap and have your marketing and lead generation taken care of but the fact is that is not true. If you aren’t investing in both marketing and lead gen, you will not get the results you desire in your business. I repeat, you will not get the results you desire in your business.

That said, you don’t need a million dollar budget either. I started with an extremely modest budget (seriously, less than $100) and I grew it from there.
