How a spiritual sabbatical in Italy changed the way I do business

how italy changed the way I do business

One year ago today, as I sat in a small cafe in a small village just north of Rome, I knew that not only would I never be the same, but my business wouldn’t be either. A couple of weeks prior, I’d began making HUGE shifts in my business. We completely restructured the company, added 2 new group programs, removed 100% of our 1 on 1 programs and changed the company name. We were going through a complete rebrand and though on the outside it looked like I had it all together, deep down, I was freaking out. I wasn’t quite sure if I’d made the right decision for my business, and we could potentially loose hundreds of thousands, but I knew I had to keep pushing forward.

I’d recently heard about a small village where miracles were often spoke about. About 2 hours via train from Rome, a place where once you go, you’re never the same. I decided at that moment that I wanted to see what this place was about.

I chose this time, Spring Equinox for my visit. Its the real New Year, after all, and what better way to start the year off than with a renewed mind and spirit.

After taking the 2 hour train ride to Assisi, Italy and a taxi ride just 10 mins from the train station to a hotel that happened to have the most amazing view of the chapel, I knew that I was in a special place. (BTW, behind the scenes pictures linked in post!)

I wish I could tell you that the angels from heaven spoke to me or that some huge thing happened…. but it didn’t. I spent hours in meditation at that chapel, time sitting under the super moon the night of the equinox, in stillness and in quiet. I didn’t work a bit while in Assisi, the entire time devoted to being quiet, listening and obeying.

I spent those days truly getting in touch with what I desired out of life, what I desired my company to look like, the community, the culture, and how it all would piece together. I was a bit disappointed when I left and there was no obvious miracle that took place while there. No angels sang by my bedside, no one brought a message from the most high. But hey, I got plenty of rest right?

After taking the train back into Rome and settling in back at my apartment, I checked my email to discover something amazing. I’d received more strategy sessions in the course of a week that I had in probably 3 months. And, after narrowing it down and calling the qualified applicants back, I closed 50% at the new price point….with ease.

Now, why is this important?

Because the “miracle” that I thought didn’t happen, was happening all alone. I took time out to get clear and aligned on who I was, who and how I was called to serve. I took time to get out of the “hustle” mentality and slipped into ease…. I realize that often times, busy is just that…busy. And busy doesn’t equate to productive or profitable. And often ease, equates to productivity and profitability.

Since then, I’ve been sure to take at least 2 days off work each week. I work 2 hours most days and 4 hours one day a week. That is a total 12 hours a week working. My income has SIGNIFICANTLY increased, in ways previously unimaginable.

All because I chose and choose ease, over hustle.

And all because of Italy.
